Welcome to all our new and returning families to St. Michael the Archangel Academy’s nineteenth year serving Catholic families who are educating their children at home. If there is a familiar ring in reading this, I have woven the ten statements contained in our Philosophy within this Director’s Corner.

The same concerns that I had in 1992 that motivated our family to seek an alternative education system for our four children continue to exist even more so today. In 1992, when we formed this Academy, there were seven original families that agreed we needed a private school to document our children’s academic progress and where they could earn a high school diploma. We also needed an academy that would serve the interests of Catholic families. Following the California Department of Education Code guidelines, St. Michael the Archangel Academy was established as a private school.

For Joe and me, having a Christ centered education for our four children was a priority. Our children had been enrolled nine years in Catholic schools and the cost for four children in 1991 was almost $15,000 per year. It was very difficult to recognize that we could no longer afford Catholic private schooling for our four children. The alternative public school system was not even an option that I could face. Knowing that our children needed an education, I began a novena of daily Masses and Communions for direction from our Lord. Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ is at the heart of all Christian endeavors, especially those involving the family. It was during this novena that I met several Catholic families who were homeschooling independently. Educating our children at home seemed an answer to prayer; however, my husband was concerned that the children would not be able to get a diploma.
